UAW Local 5124 Steward Election Announcement

On June 17–19, 2026, members of GETUP-UAW Local 5124 will elect graduate workers to serve as stewards of our local union.

Earlier this spring, Graduate Workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of ratifying our first contract. Following this vote, we established our local union and elected an Executive Board. We must now elect Lead Stewards and Lead Stewards from each of the five steward areas outlined in our local union’s bylaws. All Steward positions are elected for two-year terms. The election will be a secret, online ballot.

Below is a list of 33 open positions across each of the 5 steward areas. Stewards are allocated based on the number of members in good standing in each area as of May 26th, 2026:

  • Biomedical Graduate Studies: 12 Stewards including 2 Lead Stewards
  • School of Engineering and Applied Sciences: 5 Stewards including 2 Lead Stewards
  • School of Arts and Sciences—Lab Sciences: 5 Stewards including 2 Lead Stewards
  • School of Arts and Sciences—Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mathematics: 6 Stewards including 2 Lead Stewards
  • Professional Schools and Annenberg School of Communication: 5 Stewards including 2 Lead Stewards

See description of the steward role at the bottom of this email.

TIMELINE:

  • Acceptance of Nominations: June 2–9
  • Election: June 16–17
  • Runoffs (if necessary): June 23–24

QUALIFICATIONS

  • For Steward positions: All candidates must be GETUP-UAW Local 5124 members in continuous good standing for 30 days prior to accepting nomination; all members that meet this requirement are automatically nominated for these positions.
  • The Elections Committee will verify membership in good standing and nominees’ required qualifications, per the UAW International Constitution.
  • Members may run for both Lead Steward and Steward positions.
  • Members are eligible to vote for the Lead Steward and Steward candidates who are running for a position in their own area.

Please look out for future emails with more information about the election and how to accept nominations.

In solidarity,

UAW Local 5124 Elections Committee
